A Hundred Phone Calls, A Thousandfold Return
During the first class of the semester, Wen Yining received a call from Qiao Manyun, the mother of her roommate, and from then on was treated as a free nanny to take photos, buy meals, hold umbrellas, and tuck in blankets, besieged step by step by hundreds of calls a day. A single refusal on her part brought false police reports and disciplinary threats, and on the night her grandmother was critically ill, she was driven to switch off her phone by a barrage of calls, missing their last goodbye. This time she neither cried nor made a fuss, quietly recording every incoming call and saving every piece of evidence. Just on the day when Qiao Manyun was at her most triumphant and the center of everyone's attention, she pressed play, laying the truth bare before everyone—what was owed would always be returned a thousandfold.
