The herb field in the mountains withers overnight, and an ordinary cultivator, Jiang Zhaochuan, falls under suspicion because of it. With his gluttonous, sharp-tongued spirit pet Nuotuan, whose sense of smell is astonishing, he follows the trail of purple-black crystal sand and gradually discovers that someone has secretly laid a spirit-draining formation covering the mountain range. The mastermind, Pei Wujiu, keeps drawing spiritual energy from the mountains to break through his cultivation level, while Jiang Zhaochuan has his own spiritual power drained dry by the main formation in a head-on confrontation. In the crisis, he discovers that his unremarkable, subtle ability to control spiritual energy can just avoid being devoured by the formation, and he and his companions break the secondary formations one by one. In the end, after Pei Wujiu sees the herb field sprout again with his own eyes, he chooses to stop and personally severs the formation.
