Xie Mingzhu, daughter of Xie Huaiyuan, a junior official of the Court of Judicial Review in Jiangnan, is born unusually robust and grows up with a strength that sets her apart from other girls. When the emperor orders a selection of women for the imperial harem, Mingzhu enters the palace, where her imposing build catches everyone's attention. Instead of dismissing her, the emperor appoints her Consort Duan and assigns her to Jinghua Palace, claiming that someone with her presence can ward off evil spirits in his cold, lifeless palace.
