Modern-day farmer Lin Gensheng has been working tirelessly through a drought when, late one night, he unexpectedly hears cries for help from famine victims in Xihewan a hundred years in the past. He discovers by chance that the food rations, mountain spring water, and medicinal herbs he saves can mysteriously disappear across time, providing real relief to the people suffering from drought, locusts, and exploitation by local gentry. As he repeatedly sends supplies, his own farmland mysteriously becomes extraordinarily fertile. While helping his village fight the drought and build irrigation channels, Lin Gensheng continues aiding the ancient village. Ultimately, he helps the people of Xihewan become self-sufficient through farming and unite to overthrow corrupt officials and oppressive local elites.
