Camphor Town has a custom of cutting down camphor trees to make dower chests when daughters marry. Xiang Wan and Xiang Nuan are twins. Their parents dote on Xiang Nuan, cutting down Xiang Wan's camphor tree to make a dower chest for Xiang Nuan while constantly demanding Xiang Wan's savings and belongings. Heartbroken on the eve of the wedding, Xiang Wan bypasses her natal family and travels far to Switzerland with Cheng Mo, receiving deep affection from her husband and mother-in-law and starting a small family of her own through pregnancy. After marriage, Xiang Nuan spends extravagantly and refuses to do housework, leading to an outburst of conflict with her husband and ultimately divorce. Realizing their mistakes, Xiang Wan's parents and brother travel to Switzerland with a remade camphor chest to make amends, but the belated apology cannot heal the old wounds.
