A modern father and son accidentally travel through time together to the Great Qi Dynasty. The son, Fang Yan, possesses a photographic memory and eagerly hopes his Chinese department professor father, Fang Xianzheng, will pass the imperial examinations so he can slack off as a rich second generation. Unexpectedly, Fang Xianzheng fails the courtyard exam, plunging the household into financial ruin and despair. Young Fang Yan has no choice but to venture outside to seek a livelihood, earn money to resolve the corvée labor crisis, and even cleverly enter a banquet of elites, pulling strings with all his might to secure a prestigious Hanlin mentor for his father.
