Lin Ye, unemployed just after graduating and desperate to cover his mother's medical expenses, takes a night-shift security job at Qingshan Cemetery. At midnight, he can hear lingering echoes of the consciousness left behind by the dead. Using abandoned technology for archiving the terminal consciousness of human beings, he follows these echoes to find overlooked money-making opportunities and helps consciousness replicas resolve their lingering attachments before being archived. During his investigation, he uncovers a mysterious connection between Chen An, a missing night watchman, a faceless model in the western section, and the designation A17. As his wristband and access control system repeatedly confuse identities, Lin Ye finally discovers that the cemetery is an experimental node left over from the 749 Anomalous Digital Cognition Program. After lying dormant for years, the system is gradually identifying him as Chen An, the missing watchman.
