Centered on the interactions between a time traveler and the royal family of the Ming Dynasty, the story follows the time traveler as he unexpectedly encounters Zhu Biao in prison. He offers Zhu Biao guidance through the principles that the Yellow Springs should not be confined to the countryside, that one should come from the common people and return to the common people, and that rulers should remain connected to the people. He also sees through Zhu Biao's disguise as Zhu Di and even asks to wear the imperial dragon robe for fun, offering seeds capable of yielding a thousand jin of grain per mu in exchange. Family conversations run alongside the main plot, including children asking their father why he did not report his own rebellion to the authorities, father and son bickering over the concealment of a concubine, and arrangements to find eligible young women from meritorious noble families. L’histoire s’articule autour des interactions entre un voyageur temporel et la famille impériale des Ming. Le voyageur rencontre par hasard Zhu Biao en prison et le guide grâce à l’idée que l’au-delà ne doit pas se limiter aux campagnes, qu’il faut venir du peuple et retourner au peuple. Il découvre également que Zhu Biao se fait passer pour Zhu Di. Il va jusqu’à demander à porter la robe impériale au dragon pour s’amuser et propose, en échange, des graines de céréales capables de produire mille jin par mu. L’intrigue comprend aussi des conversations familiales : les enfants demandent à leur père pourquoi il n’a pas dénoncé sa propre rébellion aux autorités, un père et son fils se chamaillent parce qu’il a caché qu’il avait pris une concubine, et des démarches sont entreprises pour trouver des jeunes femmes en âge de se marier parmi les familles nobles méritantes. Le récit met en scène les relations et les conflits entre personnages dans un cadre historique ancien.
