Herb farmer Old Chen saves a speaking panda and discovers a piece of divine bamboo. Whenever his heart is set on saving lives, the bamboo pours forth miraculous spiritual rice, feeding hot porridge to all ninety-seven households in the village. Yet the divine bamboo has a strict rule: it relieves hunger, but never greed. If someone greedy touches it, the rice instantly turns into toxic black grains that poison anyone who eats it. After failing to buy out Old Chen at a banquet, the wealthy landlord Zhou Fugui slips the poisonous black rice into the feast, poisoning innocent children and turning Old Chen into the target of public fury. Meanwhile, something ancient stirs at the bottom of a dried-up well. Gripping the divine bamboo tightly, Old Chen realizes that this time, he is saving not just lives, but the very soul of humanity.
