Ten Years of Kindness, in Exchange for a Fine
Xu Jianchuan, who has managed the village's irrigation well for twenty years, is reported by Zhou Nian. The fine is paid in full that very day, yet the next day she shows up demanding three days of water. In front of the entire village, he lays down three rules: repairs must be paid for at the proper rate, water usage must be registered according to regulations, and he will no longer pay expenses on anyone else's behalf. Rumors, edited videos, and people arriving to dig another well follow one after another. When the well collapses, she claims she was only trying to help. To drain water from her own fields, she digs into the public embankment, and the breach splits open on a rainy night. When the formal demand notice arrives, she brings out old receipts, hoping to offset the compensation, unaware that the Xu family has kept records of the financial support they gave her for her education, without ever asking for repayment. The judgment takes effect, and she must pay in monthly installments. The year the irrigation well is renovated, his father hands the keys to his son. Keys only open doors; it is the rules that keep things running.
