In the seventh month of the apocalypse, everyone is fleeing the city, but carpenter Chen Dashan heads in the opposite direction. He carries an old wooden chest back home, and inside is his seventeen-year-old daughter. She has been bitten. She hasn't turned into a monster, but she hasn't recovered either. The neighbors urge him to send her away, while the villagers wait to see what will burst out the moment he opens his door. He guards that one door and refuses to open it, no matter how much anyone tries to persuade him. He puts a bite guard on her, bandages the wounds on her arm, and places her old teddy bear back in her arms, telling her over and over, "She's still my daughter." One day, one month, three months... He never wanted her to get better. All he wanted was for her to still recognize the way home.

Traz às costas um velho baú de madeira e, lá dentro, está a sua filha de dezassete anos. Ela foi mordida. Não se transformou num monstro, mas também não recuperou. Os vizinhos aconselham-no a mandá-la embora, enquanto os habitantes da aldeia aguardam pelo dia em que ele abrir a porta e algo sair de lá de dentro. Ele limita-se a guardar aquela porta e recusa-se a abri-la, por mais que tentem convencê-lo. Coloca-lhe um protetor contra mordidas, trata os ferimentos no braço e volta a colocar nos seus braços o velho ursinho de pano. Repetidamente, diz-lhe: «Ela continua a ser minha filha». Um dia, um mês, três meses... Ele nunca quis que ela melhorasse. Só queria que ela ainda reconhecesse o caminho de regresso a casa.
