En 1980, à l'usine de machines Hongxing de Yanzhou, l'ouvrière Lin Xiumei proteste contre la discrimination entre hommes et femmes dans la distribution des cadeaux du Nouvel An en renversant une table devant tout le monde. Son geste attire l'attention de He Zhenbang, le fils du directeur de l'usine. Après avoir été chassée de chez elle pour avoir protégé sa nièce maltraitée, Lin Xiumei décide d'épouser précipitamment He Zhenbang afin de faire taire les rumeurs. Après le mariage, elle brise le stéréotype traditionnel selon lequel les femmes doivent endurer les humiliations et les épreuves en silence. Grâce à ses compétences techniques exceptionnelles et à son tempérament fougueux, elle tient tête à sa belle-mère tyrannique et parvient peu à peu à gagner le cœur de sa belle-fille, qui la rejetait au départ.
