On a dewy spring morning along the bluestone street, an awkward boy carrying a stack of bamboo steamers steps carefully so as not to stumble—it is his very first day helping at the pastry shop at the end of the alley. Always clumsy, his movements rushed and the steamer cloths wobbling, the lady boss never hurries him, only gently saying when the lid is lifted: "Keep the fire steady, and the pastry will turn out sweet." From the late summer's new rice harvest to winter's first snow, he learns to wash rice, knead dough, wrap fillings, and tend the steam, gradually learning to knead his impetuous youth right into the rice dough. Watching the river leisurely glide past, he finally comes to realize that neither this small town nor true craftsmanship is ever in a rush.
