In the early 1990s in Linjiawan, a water town in Jiangnan, younger sister Lin Wanyue is gentle and hardworking, while older sister Lin Wanqing is vain and mean. Lu Jingchuan, owner of a silk workshop in the neighboring village, disguises himself as a down-and-out sericulturist to attend a blind date. Lin Wanqing humiliates him in public and even pushes her sister down when she tries to make peace. Lu Jingchuan quietly leaves, yet falls for kind and skilled Wanyue. After learning his true identity, the two confess their love. Having missed out on a great match, Lin Wanqing goes mad with regret, marries a fake wealthy merchant who abuses her, and schemes with her husband to poison Lu's silkworm rooms out of revenge. Wanyue uses her wisdom to help Lu Jingchuan expose their wicked crimes and bring the culprits to justice. Ultimately, the sisters part ways, while Wanyue and Lu Jingchuan stand together through thick and thin, completing a serendipitous love.
