The impoverished youth Shen Yanchuan retrieves an earthen statue of the Earth God discarded and smashed by the wealthy Qin Fengniang. To his astonishment, the statue speaks and bestows upon him a small amount of divine living soil, helping him transform two mu of barren, alkaline soil into fertile land. Rather than directly granting wealth, the Earth God instructs Shen Yanchuan on plowing, drainage, and crop rotation to nurture the soil, reminding him that whatever is taken from the earth must be returned. Seeing the Shen family's bumper harvest, Qin Fengniang tries to obstruct them and fails. In her greed for quick profit, she seizes the divine soil and recklessly cultivates the land regardless of overexploiting its fertility, ruining the fields. As torrential rains approach and flash floods loom, Shen Yanchuan makes the agonizing choice to sacrifice his own crops and open the floodgates of Laolongkou to save the villagers of three communities. After surviving the catastrophe, Qin Fengniang has a sudden awakening and returns the farmland she cunningly seized.
