Martial arts grandmaster Ning Yuan accidentally travels to the frontier of Great Yu, where he becomes a lowly foot soldier. Just as the court hands out captured women in the camp to appease the troops, the domineering squad leader Ding Sanpao deliberately makes trouble for him and sets him up again and again. With his extraordinary martial skills, Ning Yuan forcefully protects everyone in the clashes within the camp, then rides alone through the enemy lines on the battlefield and takes the enemy commander's head, rising to squad leader on his merits. Meanwhile, the chiliarch Wang Huan and Ding Sanpao lay one deadly trap after another, sending him deep into dangerous lands to track the enemy. Step by step, Ning Yuan overcomes every crisis, battles enemy sentries in the Gobi, wins the loyalty of the brothers under his command, and at the smoke-filled Yanmen Pass carves out his own legend as a guardian of the frontier.
