On a bitterly cold day, Wang Po finds a newborn baby abandoned in an icy pit. The village elders debate whether to take the child to the authorities or leave her to die. Having been disappointed by their own children, who grew up and left them behind, they fear that raising a girl will only bring them the same heartbreak. But they cannot bear to watch an innocent baby freeze to death, so they decide to take her home and raise her together.
