Five Yuan to Buy Fruit, You Think I'm Mean; Typhoon Passes, We Cry Our Hearts Out
On the eve of a category 17 super typhoon making landfall, fruit merchant Cheng Dong drove five semi-trailer refrigerated trucks overnight to his girlfriend Nan Zhi's hometown, offering a conscientious high price of five yuan per catty to rush-harvest passion fruit. Unexpectedly, his girlfriend's vain cousin Nan Sang stood in the way, bragging that a Beijing friend was willing to pay an astronomical price of fifteen yuan, and inciting all the village fruit farmers to curse Cheng Dong away. Cheng Dong decisively shifted to a neighboring town to buy a thousand tons of good fruit and made a huge fortune, only secretly helping his timely-awakened father-in-law rush-harvest to stop losses. Two days later, after the typhoon passed, the village's orchards were completely destroyed, leaving the ground full of residue and rotten fruit. Having lost their entire fortunes, the villagers brutally beat Nan Sang and then begged Cheng Dong to buy up the rest at a low price, only to be domineeringly rejected by Cheng Dong. The greedy ones ultimately reaped what they sowed.
