The late 1990s to early 2000s marked a painful period of rapid transition for small-town China. The old systems were gradually breaking down, while new orders had yet to be fully established. Ordinary people clung to traditional stability and matching family backgrounds, yet were forced to accept ever-accelerating changes; they looked down upon the rowdy disorder of street punks, while also understanding under life's heavy burdens the helplessness of struggling at the bottom. The love between Su Wan and Lu Yan is never merely a simple opposites-attract romance; it is a microcosm of that era—a fierce collision and gentle reconciliation between decency and street life, rules and wildness, security and restlessness, tradition and rebirth. Everyone loves the glamour above the clouds, but forgets the warmth grounded in the human world.
