Kind-hearted midwife Wang Po saves a green fox suffering from dystocia on a rainy night and is given a pearl by the fox immortal in gratitude. When a severe drought strikes the village, Wang Po exhausts all the gold and silver gifted by the fox immortal to relieve the villagers, yet she faces cruel treatment from her daughter-in-law and meek indifference from her son. Through subsequent trials of being buried alive by her kin and slandered by fellow villagers, the fox immortal appears time and again to protect her. In the end, good and evil each receive their just deserts.
