Wealthy merchant Qian Wancang disdains his ancestral wooden God of Wealth statue for being old and worn, casting it away to spend a fortune on a white jade statue instead. While the old wooden god protects virtue, the jade statue is mere hollow appearance, bringing ceaseless misfortune and ruin upon the Qian family. Meanwhile, poor young maiden Jiang Wanhe retrieves the abandoned wooden god. She seeks no windfall and stays true to her heart. Despite poverty and her father's severe illness, she works diligently with her carpentry skills and shuns ill-gotten wealth. The wooden God of Wealth discerns good and evil, guarding only the virtuous and turning away the greedy. In the end, the covetous Qian family collapses, while sincere, industrious Jiang Wanhe steadily prospers through her craft, ultimately becoming one of the wealthiest in the land.
