In a northern village during the 1980s, Gu He falls into desperation when tragedy strikes her family. The injured Chen Jianjun spends his entire three years of savings to save her brother's life. Out of gratitude, Gu He chooses to marry this limping man who is looked down upon by the villagers. After marriage, she opens a grain mill, resolves difficulties caused by her sister-in-law, and thwarts malicious sabotage from competitor Hu Jinwang, exposing his scheme of tainting flour with coal ash. As the mill thrives, Gu He grows into a strong matriarch, and their marriage born of gratitude blossoms into true love.
