Agricultural university graduate Lu Xiu discovers from meteorological data that a severe hailstorm is about to strike Kaoshan Village. While fruit merchants offer a high price of seven yuan per pound, village director Lu Dewang incites the villagers to hold out stubbornly for ten yuan. Lu Xiu decisively sells his family's 65,000 pounds of grapes and helps neighboring Xiahe Village rush-harvest 280,000 pounds, earning 210,000 yuan in commission. When news travels back, jealous villagers slander him for cutting off their fortune, striking Lu Xiu's family from the genealogy book and expelling them from the village. The hailstorm eventually obliterates over a thousand acres of vineyards, leaving the villagers with total losses, and Lu Dewang's embezzlement of insurance funds is exposed. Facing his former clansmen begging at his doorstep for money, Lu Xiu responds only with the crossed-out genealogy record: 'My fate was never yours to decide.'
