In the 18th year of Hongwu, court politics and northern frontier warfare clash in the Ming Empire. Li Jinglong, Duke of Cao, trained carefully under Xu Da, is ordered to drill troops and march out on campaign. Along the way, he handles breaches of military discipline and navigates the tangled politics among bureaucrats and founding nobles. In the capital, the massive Guo Huan corruption scandal erupts; Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang uses it to ruthlessly purge graft across the Ministry of Revenue and local prefectures, while Crown Prince Zhu Biao clashes with his father over the severity of the punishments. On the northern front, Li Jinglong leads a lone force deep into Liaodong, only to be surrounded when Naghachu dams and breaches the river, enduring a brutal bloodbath that brings his army near total annihilation. Meanwhile, Daoyan stirs the waters from the shadows. Capitalizing on Empress Ma's third death anniversary, the Crown Prince summons the feudatory princes' families and Daoyan to the capital, further escalating the tensions among imperial authority, feudatory princes, and meritorious nobles.
