Modern office worker Li Mo accidentally travels back in time to the first year of the Zhenguan era, becoming the second legitimate son of Li Ji, Duke of Cao. Right at that time, Emperor Li Shimin decrees that the sons of the nobility must report to the Ministry of Personnel for examination by Zhangsun Wuji to select officials. Harboring an old grudge against Li Mo's father, Zhangsun Wuji deliberately makes things difficult and plans to ruin Li Mo's official career through the assessment. Seeing that reason won't work, Li Mo simply takes the unorthodox route—slapping Zhangsun Wuji unconscious right in public!
