In the late Eastern Han dynasty, Changshan youth Zhao Yun, harboring benevolence and righteousness, organized a volunteer force to protect local neighbors. Il a d'abord rejoint Gongsun Zan, mais ayant vu sa nature à mépriser le peuple, il est parti résolument pour défendre la morale et la justice. Au fil de ses périples, Zhao Yun a rencontré Liu Bei, soucieux du peuple, et l'a dès lors suivi avec dévotion. Qu'il s'agisse de sauver seul son seigneur à la pente de Changban, de refuser la beauté à Guiyang, de conseiller la restitution des terres et des habitations pour témoigner de la compassion envers le peuple à Yizhou, ou de mettre en déroute l'armée de Cao Cao grâce à la ruse du camp vide à Hanshui ; il s'est montré courageux et habile au combat tout en ne convoitant ni la gloire ni la richesse, chérissant la loyauté, la justice et tout le peuple.
