A canal-digging notice shatters the peace of the old street. Generations-old shops face demolition, and an old stove carrying the memories of three generations is set to vanish. Faced with this sudden upheaval, the neighbors go from panic and resignation to mutual support, using the simplest ways to protect the home they have shared for years. The official overseeing the canal project discovers during field visits that the old river bend can be bypassed, prompting a resurvey and revised plan that balances engineering with the people's livelihoods. Through united efforts, the new plan is approved, the canal is successfully joined, and the lights of the old street shine brightly once more.
