During the Republic of China era, Li Qing, a college student in the city, returns to her hometown during the summer vacation to visit her grandfather, Li Jian, who runs an old herbal medicine shop and treats ordinary ailments like colds and fatigue for the neighbors. At first, Li Qing is merely curious and tags along with her grandfather to identify, sun-dry, and dispense herbs. Clumsy and inexperienced, she confuses dried herbs with fresh ones and dispenses the wrong medicine, receiving stern guidance from her grandfather. But over the course of the summer, she learns to identify, weigh, and package medicinal herbs, dispensing prescriptions on her own for the first time, and roasting licorice over again after burning it. Accompanied by A Yuan, Aunt Wang, and Old Mr. Zhang, she comes to understand the profound wisdom behind every single herb. As summer ends, she packs her bags to return to the city for her studies, leaving her roots deep within this modest apothecary.
