On the day she was swept out by her husband's family, the whole village waited to laugh at her. But she set up a big pot in a broken house at the east end of the village, borrowed the intimidating presence of the cow-butcher next door, and made her own sauce. From town markets to county shops, she turned humiliation into a golden brand. Her ex-husband pesters her and rivals play dirty tricks, but she counters every move and grows stronger. Yet when her sign hangs on the busiest street in the provincial capital, a down-and-out woman carrying a bundle comes to her door — years ago, she herself once stood at someone else's door just like that.
