Chen Dazhuang, a rural veterinarian, holds the lifeline of the entire town's livestock industry in his hands and enjoys a peaceful life. However, his wife, Wang Xiuqin, who blindly dotes on her older brother, and her family constantly exploit him. Relying on his sister's support, his brother-in-law, Wang Decai, repeatedly squeezes Chen Dazhuang for everything he can, even using veterinary medicine to threaten Chen's five-year-old daughter, Xiaozao. This finally pushes Chen Dazhuang past his breaking point. He refuses to tolerate their behavior any longer, withdraws his resources, demands repayment of debts, and gathers evidence of their asset transfers and deliberate troublemaking to pursue legal action. The members of the Wang family soon suffer the consequences of their own actions. His mother-in-law becomes ill from the torment caused by her own son and eventually dies. Wang Decai becomes disabled under the burden of debt, while Wang Xiuqin loses her job and custody of her daughter. The two sink into poverty.
