Transmigrating to the Great Qian dynasty, Lin Hao is bound to a system where seeking death allows him to return to modern times as the richest man, leaving him desperately wanting to die. In the imperial hall, he publicly claims he wants to be the eight-year-old emperor's half-stepdad, provocatively seeking execution. Unexpectedly, the young emperor counters by betrothing him to Princess Zhenguo, Li Xiuning. Having failed to seek death and forcibly granted overwhelming martial strength, Lin Hao is demoted to Datong as a county magistrate. He racks his brain to provoke local tyrants and villains to get himself killed, but his straightforward subordinate Wu Zhi constantly ruins his plans, while Li Xiuning secretly protects him all along. Caught between his obsession with returning home and the righteousness of protecting the border people and the country, the top scholar who only wanted to die is forced down the path of bringing peace and stability to the realm.
