Hu Guifen of Liuwan Village has always been notoriously stingy. For over a decade, whenever villagers celebrated weddings or other happy occasions, she would give just 10 yuan, a few eggs, or a couple of ears of corn. She would also regularly bring extra guests to their banquets and pack up food to take home. Now that her son is getting married, however, she expects to receive generous cash gifts in return. On the wedding day, villagers from across the entire village arrive with the exact same kinds of gifts she once gave them: eggs, chives, corn, and even a toad, one after another, leaving Hu Guifen publicly humiliated. Despite her mother-in-law's unreasonable demands, the bride, Xu Yutong, insists on treating the villagers kindly. After the wedding banquet, the villagers secretly give the newlyweds genuine wedding cash gifts. The old debts have been settled, but the bonds of friendship remain, and the young couple finally learns the true meaning of give and take.

Hu Guifen, del villaggio di Liuwan, è sempre stata famosa per la sua avarizia. Per oltre dieci anni, ogni volta che gli abitanti del villaggio celebravano un matrimonio o un'altra occasione felice, lei regalava soltanto dieci yuan, qualche uovo o alcune pannocchie di mais. Inoltre, era solita portare altre persone ai banchetti e farsi preparare dei pacchetti di cibo da portare a casa. Ora che suo figlio sta per sposarsi, però, spera di ricevere generose somme di denaro come regalo. Il giorno delle nozze, gli abitanti di tutto il villaggio arrivano con esattamente gli stessi regali che lei aveva fatto loro in passato: uova, erba cipollina, mais e persino un rospo. Uno dopo l'altro, questi regali fanno fare a Hu Guifen una pessima figura davanti a tutti. Nonostante le provocazioni della suocera, la sposa Xu Yutong insiste nel trattare con gentilezza gli abitanti del villaggio. Al termine del banchetto nuziale, i paesani consegnano di nascosto ai novelli sposi vere buste con denaro. I vecchi conti sono stati saldati, ma i legami affettivi restano.
