Dopo aver riportato profonde ferite, decide di lasciarsi il passato alle spalle e di trasferirsi lontano, presso una stazione per la lotta alla desertificazione a Minqin, nel Gansu. Qui, seguendo le orme di suo padre, mette radici nella terra sabbiosa e guarisce lentamente le ferite interiori insieme al vento, alla sabbia e alle piante. Il suo ex amante lo raggiunge per cercare di rimediare agli errori commessi, ma Wen Shisong accetta serenamente il passato senza alcuna intenzione di tornare indietro. Non cerca più nell'amore un luogo in cui trovare il proprio posto. Con le sue mani pianta una piantina dopo l'altra e, tra le distese di sabbia gialla, scopre il proprio valore e la serenità.
