In the 1990s, chef Cheng Wanqiu has her wages slashed and her recipes taken by the owner of a restaurant. Furious, she quits. To secure her daughter's school fees, she plans to earn a living by running a street stall, but spends ten yuan rescuing a talking hen named Jiao Jiao, a divine pet of the Kitchen God. Starting with a small braised-meat stall, the woman and the chicken attract customers with their unique delicacies, as well as jealousy and schemes from her former boss and rival vendors. Faced with undercutting, sabotage, and tempting offers, Wanqiu relies on her culinary skills and courage, while Jiao Jiao uses supernatural powers and animal companions to turn the tables time and again. From earning her first hard-won money to running her own restaurant, Wanqiu finally establishes herself. Then a letter from the provincial capital brings them a new challenge.
