The Crown Prince Audits the Accounts, and the Officials Panic
Xiao Jing transmigrates into the body of a crown prince, expecting a bright future. Instead, the first piece of family business he inherits is an enormous mess that could cost him his head. One hundred thousand taels of disaster relief silver have vanished, and the assembled court officials are waiting to see him convicted. Just when he manages to save his neck by auditing the accounts, his trusted subordinate arrives in the middle of the night with a tiger tally, announcing that they can stage a palace coup tonight! Xiao Jing wonders if he could at least look at his predecessor's handover notes first. Forced into service to save his life, a modern-day accountant gets to work. He inspects silver chests, tracks grain ships, and rushes into fires, investigating everything from the Eastern Palace to the common streets. But he discovers that human lives are hidden behind the missing silver, and that the famine is actually part of a carefully orchestrated scheme. He knows how to balance the books, but he cannot calculate the human heart.
