The Silent Journey Home
At 18, Zhou Xuchuan earned admission to Jingzhou University with outstanding grades. To raise enough money for tuition, he worked at a construction site for 43 consecutive days after the college entrance examination, yet he was still 6,800 yuan short. His mother, Zhao Guifen, knew perfectly well that the money was intended for his tuition, but she called the police anyway because he had taken money from home without permission. After the incident came to light, she not only forced Zhou Xuchuan to record a fake apology but also sent 13 complaint emails to the university in succession. Yet when his younger brother spent more than 20,000 yuan, Zhao Guifen was willing to handle the matter at home only. After Zhou Xuchuan questioned her again and again, she finally lost control and admitted that if he really ended up with a criminal record, his whole life would be ruined. Only then did Zhou Xuchuan understand that his mother had always known the consequences; she had simply been playing favorites.
