The protagonist, originally a youth from a Yellow River tribe, unexpectedly gains immortality during a geological catastrophe and torrential flash flood. He assists the Yan-Huang tribal alliance, improves agriculture, constructs semi-subterranean dwellings, and brings an end to the era of eating raw meat and drinking blood. In the Battle of Zhuolu, he uses simple fortifications to defend against the Chiyou tribe and protect his kin. Following Da Yu across mountains and rivers, he dredges waterways, participates in flood control, and develops flood-diversion methods. He witnesses the abdication system of leadership and watches the tribal alliance gradually evolve into the early Huaxia civilization.
