Lu Feng is penniless when the village chief arranges for him to help out at Hongying’s home. Hongying lives with her sister-in-law Xiaoya, and the grain in their jar will not last a month. When his second aunt comes demanding repayment, Lu Feng drives his knife into the frozen ground and makes a vow: he will pay back thirty yuan in three days. Carrying the hot sweet potato Hongying slipped him, he enters the mountains alone. A lone wolf lunges for his throat, and with a battered hunting knife, he fights his way to survival. From then on, he hunts wild boar, digs up wild ginseng, battles a giant bear, contracts barren mountains, and founds a cooperative, leading the whole village to prosperity through the mountains. Some are jealous and report him; others trip him up along the way. But Lu Feng says that once he has stepped through this door, he will not leave. Your troubles are my troubles.
