À la suite d'une parole prononcée sous le coup de la colère, elle remonte trente ans dans le passé et devient la belle-mère de sa propre belle-mère. Elle compte lui rendre exactement toutes les règles qu'elle lui a imposées, mais découvre que chaque nouvelle règle qu'elle établit finira également par s'appliquer à elle. Pour rentrer chez elle, elle doit amener sa belle-mère à abolir volontairement les anciennes règles. Elle prend la place d'honneur et lui fait goûter à chacune de ces règles, tout en apprenant elle-même à reconnaître ses torts et à mettre la main à la pâte. Son mari et son beau-père se mettent eux aussi à cuisiner et à faire la lessive, comprenant enfin que les tâches ménagères doivent être partagées. Une fois toutes les anciennes règles abolies, Lin Xiaoman retourne dans le présent. Toute la famille se retrouve autour de la table, chacun aidant ceux qui sont occupés et prenant le relais lorsqu'il a du temps libre. La famille vit enfin dans l'harmonie et la joie.
