Gangzi returns to Kaoshan Village after failing to make something of himself in the city and inherits the small convenience store at the village entrance left behind by his Second Granduncle. On his very first night back, Su Yufen, a charming widow, shows up at his door late at night, while Ma Daling, the fiery owner of a local restaurant, also gives him special attention. Lai Laosan, a village troublemaker, has his eyes on the store and constantly schemes against Gangzi, spreading rumors and making trouble for him. Keeping his composure, Gangzi tries to navigate the affection of the two women while struggling to run the shop. Both women give him wholehearted support, contributing money and effort to help him expand it into a supermarket. But just as business begins to flourish, Zhao Dezhu, a powerful local county figure, sets his sights on the land, and an even greater crisis looms.
