Just as his father was buried, his eldest uncle took away the fields, house, and silver jade. Gu Changhe, a poor carpenter, moved into a leaky old shed with his mother, yet insisted on writing a chipped bronze basin into the family division agreement. Relatives laughed at him for being foolish, and even his mother did not understand why he stubbornly chose this piece of junk. On the night they moved, rainwater leaked all over the house, but the bronze basin used to catch the water had changed place, and not a single drop of water was at the bottom of the basin. Gu Changhe, un povero falegname, si trasferì in un vecchio capanno che perdeva insieme a sua madre, ma pretese di mettere una bacinella di rame sbeccata nell'accordo di divisione familiare. I parenti ridevano di lui considerandolo sciocco, e persino sua madre non capiva perché avesse scelto cocciutamente quel rottame. La notte del trasloco l'acqua piovana inzuppò tutta la casa, ma la bacinella di rame usata per raccogliere l'acqua aveva cambiato posto e non c'era nemmeno una goccia d'acqua sul fondo della bacinella. Da allora, Gu Changhe tenne la bacinella in casa e non permise a nessuno di toccarla. Gli estranei sapevano solo che gli era toccata in sorte una bacinella di rame rotta. Ma a notte fonda, dopo aver chiuso le porte, mentre in casa c'erano chiaramente solo madre e figlio, risuonò la voce di una terza persona.
