The Locked Kitchen
The mother-in-law came over to take care of the postpartum confinement, and the first thing she did upon entering was change the lock on the kitchen. For five days, the daughter-in-law's dining table only had plain congee and salted vegetables, and she lost eight catties. Song Yanzhou heard movement in the kitchen in the middle of the night, and his mother said she was soaking beans, but what he smelled was chicken soup. That door remained locked, yet the kitchen always emitted stewing sounds late at night. Until that early morning, when he pulled open the refrigerator door, the white light hitting his face—he stood there, not moving for a long time. Half an hour later, the mother got into a taxi. "You are my mother, but you cannot be a mother to my wife."
