Jiang Yao, the legitimate daughter of the Jiang family in Jinling, married Pei Zheng as his successor wife at eighteen. Marrying high from a lower status, everyone was waiting to watch a joke. Yet after marriage she remained unbridled, sleeping until naturally awake, ignoring morning and evening greetings, wanting all jewelry, fabrics, and household management. Whatever she wanted she got, if unsatisfied she held it in, at worst getting a divorce. Her arrival turned the gloomy Pei family upside down. One day during an argument she brought up a divorce, and the mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and younger sister-in-law all stood on her side: you stay, he leaves. Pei Zheng, abandoning martial arts for literature at sixteen, placing among the top scholars at third rank at eighteen, originally cold and heartless, had his heart revived because of Jiang Yao. Others all said she was spoiled and willful, but he gladly accepted it.
