On a freezing New Year's Eve, two orphaned siblings endure cruel treatment. With no other choice, the older brother entrusts his little sister to another family for adoption and leaves on his own. Over the next eighteen years, the grown-up sister never gives up searching for her family. After an unexpected accident, she finally crosses paths with the brother she lost so many years ago. He rescues someone but is falsely accused by bystanders of causing the accident. As an elderly man fights for his life, the siblings stand just inches apart, yet neither recognizes the other.

Durante la gelida vigilia di Capodanno, due fratelli rimasti orfani subiscono maltrattamenti. Senza altra scelta, il fratello maggiore affida la sorellina a un'altra famiglia perché la adotti, poi parte da solo. Per diciotto anni, la sorella, ormai cresciuta, non smette mai di cercare la propria famiglia. Un incidente inaspettato le permette di incontrare nuovamente il fratello da cui era stata separata tanti anni prima. Lui salva una persona, ma viene ingiustamente accusato dai presenti di aver provocato l'incidente. Mentre un anziano lotta per la vita e riceve cure d'emergenza, i due fratelli si trovano a pochi passi l'uno dall'altra, senza però riuscire ancora a riconoscersi.
