While drinking at a roadside stall, the disheartened Lin Che meets Zhang Yao and her four friends, who have gone hungry all day. He learns that some were forced into marriage to obtain bride-price money because their parents favored sons, while others dropped out after failing the college entrance examination and ended up homeless.
