Xu Wu, the eldest daughter of the Xu family, has always been assumed to be the sensible, undemanding child. She lives in a damp, cramped room, uses an old phone, and supports herself through part-time jobs during school holidays, while her younger sister, Xu Yaya, enjoys all their parents' affection. Despite scoring 699 on the national college entrance examination, Xu Wu is left under the scorching sun before the semester begins because her mother claims Yaya has too much luggage. At a university banquet in Beijing, her entire family casually introduces her as a cousin. With her heart finally broken, she climbs a bodhi tree and unties the wooden wish plaque she hung three years earlier, giving up her place at Peking University to pursue her own path at an aviation university. When her family belatedly returns with a photo album, hoping to win her back, she neither cries nor accuses them. She simply takes a step back and calmly refuses. Vive in una piccola stanza umida, usa un vecchio telefono e si mantiene con lavori part-time durante le vacanze, mentre la sorella minore, Xu Yaya, riceve tutto l'affetto dei genitori.
