Duoduo, âgée de quatre ans, le croit. Une violente tempête arrive, craignant que grand-père ne se mouille sous la pluie, elle enfile un imperméable, attrape un grand parapluie noir et laisse un mot sur le réfrigérateur : « Grand-père, je t'ai apporté un parapluie. Ne te mouille pas. » Elle marche seule dans la pluie battante, marche sur un couvercle de regard ouvert et est emportée dans le tuyau d'évacuation. Papa descend dans l'égout, tâtonnant pour trouver sa jambe dans l'eau noire haute de poitrine. Elle est coincée sur la grille, serrant toujours dans sa main le cadenas en or qu'elle a récupéré. Hors de la salle d'urgence, papa compte une par une les mentiries du grand-père.
