The Stranger in the Old Workshop
The story begins when Shen Zhimo knocks on the door of the old workshop. Commissioned by the county cultural center, he comes to invite Zhou Shouzhuo to apply for the provincial intangible cultural heritage representative inheritor, but is flatly refused by Zhou Shouzhuo. Zhou Shouzhuo believes that a plaque cannot save the craft, and since his son won't learn it and the villagers won't learn it, once he dies and the workshop is dismantled, nothing will be left. Shen Zhimo does not leave; he stays, learning from beating the pulp, watching the heat, to making paper, starting by beating pulp for three months before discussing anything else. While learning, Shen Zhimo uses his phone to shoot videos, recording the pulp pool, bamboo curtain, paper making, and sun drying. The videos go from over four hundred views to two thousand eight, twelve thousand, and finally one hundred thousand. Fang Nianhe from the city calligraphy association comes following the videos.

L'histoire commence lorsque Shen Zhimo frappe à la porte du vieil atelier. Mandaté par le centre culturel du comté, il vient inviter Zhou Shouzhuo à poser sa candidature en tant que représentant héritier du patrimoine culturel immatériel de niveau provincial, mais il est catégoriquement rejeté par Zhou Shouzhuo. Zhou Shouzhuo estime qu'une plaque ne peut sauver le savoir-faire, que son fils n'apprend pas, que les villageois n'apprennent pas, et qu'une fois qu'il sera mort et l'atelier démoli, il ne restera plus rien. Shen Zhimo ne s'en va pas ; il reste, apprenant à battre la pâte, à surveiller le feu, puis à fabriquer du papier, en commençant par battre la pâte pendant trois mois avant de parler d'autre chose. Tout en apprenant, Shen Zhimo utilise son téléphone pour filmer des vidéos, documentant le bassin de pâte, le store en bambou, la fabrication du papier et le séchage au soleil. Les vidéos passent de plus de quatre cents vues à deux mille huit cents, douze mille, puis cent mille. Fang Nianhe, de l'association de calligraphie de la ville, arrive en suivant les vidéos.
