À 38 ans, Lin Jianguo est licencié lors d'une restructuration de son entreprise. Au plus bas de sa vie, il trouve un nouveau départ grâce à son talent pour la cuisine familiale. D'un stand au bord de la route à une petite boutique de 23 mètres carrés, il séduit les clients avec sa philosophie culinaire qui consiste à éliminer le superflu et avec un simple bol de porc braisé à la sauce soja. Après avoir remporté le concours de cuisine de la Coupe Jinwei, il devient la cible de la répression systématique du géant de la restauration, le groupe Dingsheng : coupures d'approvisionnement, jets de vinaigre, manipulation du règlement du concours et campagnes d'hostilité dans l'opinion publique. Face aux abus du capital, le vieux Lin reste fidèle à sa conviction qu'il n'y a aucune honte à gagner sa vie grâce à son propre savoir-faire. Il riposte en s'appuyant à la fois sur la loi et sur ses talents culinaires, et finit par préserver sa dignité et sa vocation première derrière les fourneaux.
