Li Qingshan, a migrant worker returning to his village, catches his wife Que Deyu having an affair with Shao Dong, who has been faking madness. After witnessing this, Li's mother is pushed down and knocked unconscious by Que Deyu, and the two falsely claim she died of a sudden heart attack, planning a hasty burial to cover up their scandal. Suspecting foul play, Li Qingshan forces the coffin open, rescues his still-breathing mother, and takes her to the hospital. Late at night, Que and Shao go to the hospital to pull the oxygen tube and silence her, and also spread rumors that Li Qingshan beats his family. The awakened mother produces covertly recorded audio and video evidence, and the two shift blame onto each other in court. Que Deyu holds the elderly woman hostage with scissors and is apprehended by the villagers. Both are sentenced, Shao Dong goes deranged in prison, and Li Qingshan stays in the village to care for his mother, mother and son gradually returning to peace.

Li Qingshan, un travailleur migrant de retour dans son village, surprend sa femme Que Deyu en train de le tromper avec Shao Dong, qui feignait la folie. Après avoir été découverte, la mère de Li est poussée et assommée par Que Deyu. Tous deux mentent en prétendant qu'elle est décédée d'une crise cardiaque foudroyante, prévoyant un enterrement précipité pour étouffer le scandale. Pris de soupçons, Li Qingshan force le cercueil, sauve sa mère qui respire encore et l'emmène à l'hôpital. Tard dans la nuit, Que et Shao se rendent à l'hôpital pour débrancher le tube d'oxygène et l'éliminer, tout en propageant la rumeur selon laquelle Li Qingshan bat sa famille. La mère, revenue à elle, sort des preuves audio et vidéo enregistrées en secret, et les deux accusés se rejetant la faute lors du procès. Que Deyu prend une vieille femme en otage avec des ciseaux avant d'être arrêtée par les villageois. Tous deux sont condamnés, Shao Dong devient fou en prison, et Li Qingshan reste au village pour s'occuper de sa mère, retrouvant peu à peu la paix.
